Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! Grass-fed is an important characteristic of our product. We have done significant research into the best, most grass-fed butter money can buy in the United States, and we believe we have found the best source out there. It's from an organic dairy in Northern California, where we are told the cows eat green grass for at least 300+ days out of the year.

To elaborate further, we are also told that occasionally, during the winter months, if the weather is too cold or too wet, the cows who produce our butter are fed a combination of haylage and silage indoors, which is pulled from the same pastures they graze. More occasionally still, and depending on the length of the weather event and the amount of haylage gathered during the year, grain may be used to supplement their diet until they can graze again, but not more than 6 lbs of grain per cow per day. This varies year by year, and we do our best not to order butter made in the winter months to avoid the possibility of a small percentage of grain-fed butter.

Grain-fed ghee has a tell… its appearance is pale yellow. Contrast this with grass-fed ghee, which has an appearance of vibrant yellow. All of our ghee is vibrant, like in our product photos.

In our cooking process when butter is heated it separates into 3 ingredients - water (which is boiled off), golden oil, and milk solid. The milk solids contain all the lactose in butter, and we go to great lengths to strain them out, so what is left is just the golden oil - ghee!

Ghee is a rich source of vitamins, antioxidants, and healthy fats. While fat should be consumed in moderation, studies show that eating fatty foods such as ghee can help the body absorb some essential vitamins and minerals. Cooking healthy foods and vegetables with ghee may help you absorb more nutrients.

While ghee is rich in fat, it also contains high concentrations of monounsaturated Omega-3s. These healthful fatty acids support a healthy heart and cardiovascular system. Studies show that using ghee as a part of a balanced diet can help reduce unhealthy cholesterol levels.

In alternative Ayurvedic medicine, ghee has been used topically to treat burns and swelling. While this is not scientifically proven, ghee does contain butyrate, a fatty acid that has known anti-inflammatory properties.

Many folks are looking for alternatives to milk, cream, or artificial creamer for their coffee. This may be because they are on a paleo or ketogenic diet, or because they are lactose intolerant, or are looking for healthy lifestyle hacks. Ghee is often used as this alternative, and if you wish to try it we recommend adding a teaspoon of ghee to a cup of coffee in a blender for best results.

Ghee melts at 95 degrees fahrenheit, so depending on your location, during the summer months, you may receive a partially melted jar of ghee. This is entirely normal and will in no way impact the quality of the product.

If you wish to solidify your melted jar, we recommend removing the lid and placing your jar in an oven, set on low, to first fully liquify the contents. Once complete, put the lid back on and place in a refrigerator for a few hours. Your ghee will be solidified and can now be stored at room temp outside of your fridge.

We have had to change our policy on this because of the high variability in shipping costs on the buckets. We have reduced the product cost to help our customers save on the overall cost, including shipping.
